Storyline

An asteroid on Wednesday fell through atmosphere and onto southwest China's Yunnan Province for a seismic impact of 2.1 magnitude, according to local eyewitnesses and seismic agencies.

Though falling asteroids and meteors or shooting stars as they are commonly known in China augurs well for good luck and peace, local residents were still shocked by the brightness of the burning of the falling asteroid.

Some amateur cameras caught the glow from the final impact behind a mountain and thick clouds.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) released its satellite observation which described the impact of the falling asteroid as an explosive yield equivalent to 540 tons of TNT.

Asteroid and meteor observers speculate that there might be unburned remains of the falling asteroid on the ground, because the heavenly body exploded some 37 kilometers above the Earth's surface.
