"We are in a position where we have a lot of old coal fire power stations that are all closing over the next years. Probably most importantly the existing nuclear fleet are all due to close in the next ten years. So we are in a position where there is going to be a big gap in the capacity that we need for generating our electricity. So this is a great opportunity for new nuclear to step in."

"China is leading the way in new nuclear construction at the moment. So the UK we haven't built for twenty five years so the ability of CGN to come in with very recent, vary valid, brand new experience of really injecting some energy and understanding of that process. It's just invaluable I think."

"The fact that our technology can go to the United Kingdom and land there proves that China has transformed from a big nuclear power to a great nuclear power. It also proves the our nation's strategy to import and absorb advanced technology from abroad and re-innovate is coming to life. And the purpose of innovation is not just for the economic and social construction of our country, but also for exporting out."

Storyline

A nuclear power station sponsored by China and the United Kingdom, which is expected to be completed by around 2025 and will make up seven percent of the UK’s electricity demands.

The Hinkley Point C nuclear power station, the biggest project under construction in Somerset, southwest England, was launched five months ago and the construction site of the power plant is still in its construction stage. The main construction part of the nuclear power facilities, or the nuclear island, will start in mid-2019.

So far China has invested more than one billion pounds into the project, and will invest around six billion pounds in total, becoming one of three shareholders of the nuclear power plant. The construction of the power plant will provide around 25,000 job opportunities in the UK.
It is actually the third nuclear power plant here at the Hinkley Point. There is a disused Hinkley Point A, which opened in 1962 and is now closed.

Another, Hinkley Point B, which has been operational since 1976, will be closed by 2025, therefore the Hinkley Point C is expected to fill the power supply gap in the U.K. after that period.

"We are in a position where we have a lot of old coal fire power stations that are all closing over the next years. Probably most importantly the existing nuclear fleet are all due to close in the next ten years. So we are in a position where there is going to be a big gap in the capacity that we need for generating our electricity. So this is a great opportunity for new nuclear to step in," said Richard Mayson, the deputy general manager of NNB Generation Company (BRB) Limited, under Electricity of France(EDF) Energy.

By entering and cooperating with the UK market, the Chinese side, China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN), has relied on its advanced technology and capital, and is expected to leverage its 30 years' experience in nuclear construction and operation and play an important role in meeting the UK’s future energy needs.

"China is leading the way in new nuclear construction at the moment. So the UK we haven't built for twenty five years so the ability of CGN to come in with very recent, vary valid, brand new experience of really injecting some energy and understanding of that process. It's just invaluable I think," said Mayson.

It also proves the our nation's strategy to import and absorb advanced technology from abroad and re-innovate is coming to life.
