Storyline

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe made an appearance on Friday as he opened the graduation ceremony at the Zimbabwe Open University in the capital Harare without speaking on the ongoing negotiations with the military.

Friday's public appearance is reportedly the first within a day after the military took control of the government in what appears to be a silent dramatic coup to end the leader's 37-year rule of the southern African country.

The official Herald newspaper late Thursday published photographs of Mugabe meeting Zimbabwe Defense Forces (ZDF) chief Constantino Chiwenga and South African envoys at State House, the presidential residence.

On Friday, 93-year-old Mugabe, clad in a cap and gown, delivered opening remarks at the ceremony, without speaking on his negotiations with the military whether he will resign and who will be his successor.

Sources say that during the Thursday meeting, Mugabe insisted that he is the only legitimate head of state, and refused to resign before the 2018 presidential election.

Earlier on Friday, the military issued a statement, saying that they are still negotiating with Mugabe, and will inform the Zimbabwean people once there are any results.

On Wednesday, Zimbabwe Defense Forces (ZDF) reportedly seized control of the state broadcasting outlet, denying reports of a coup and insisted the action was taken to "target criminals" and not against President Mugabe.

The leader of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change, Morgan Tsvangirai, on Thursday urged Mugabe to resign and pave the way for democratic elections.

Mugabe, the world's oldest head of state, was reported to be under house arrest since the military took control of the government.

The "coup no coup" situation came after Mugabe sacked his vice president, Emmerson Mnangagwa, last week, calling his former deputy a conspirator, and warned that he was planning to purge others in the ruling Zanu-PF party

The step to remove Mnangawa from his post is believed to be in preparation for the president's wife, Grace Mugabe, to succeed him in power.

Mnangagwa had reportedly returned to Zimbabwe on Tuesday, and is believed to be prepared to assume a leadership role.

Mugabe is chancellor of most of Zimbabwe's higher education institutions, demonstrating his devotion to Zimbabwe's education. Officiating their graduation ceremonies has been a tradition for many years.
