2. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Jiang Haikun, director, forecast department, China Earthquake Networks Center (with reporter asking question):
"This place, we can see here on this map, has a complicated tectonic structure. In 1950, an 8-magnitude quake shocked Chayu county. This earthquake actually happened in the northern end of the aftershock area of Chayu quake. These represent the location of earthquakes in the past. We can see this area is very volatile. The earthquake happened on the fault zone from Lhari to Chayu, which is the Chayu fault zone, a huge fault zone. It is a thrust earthquake. "
(Reporter: "So, this is the Chayu fault zone. So this five-pointed star is the location of this Nyingchi earthquake?")
"Yes. The direction of the fracture is towards the northwest. It is the fracture on the fault zone, and it is caused by thrust, the thrust from the Qinghai-Tibet plate through the Myanmar arc. This is the cause of this earthquake, from a dynamic point of view."

Storyline

Experts gathered on Saturday for an emergency meeting to probe into the 6.9-magnitude earthquake that hit Nyingchi, Tibet early morning on Saturday Beijing Time.

According to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC), the earthquake happened at 6:34 a.m.. The epicenter was monitored at 29.75 degrees north latitude and 95.02 degrees east longitude. The quake struck at a depth of about 10 km.

As the area is not densely populated, no casualties have been reported so far.

Jiang Haikun, director of the forecast department of CENC, said the earthquake took place in a very volatile fault zone, called Chayu fault zone, which saw an 8-magnitude quake back in 1950. It was caused by the thrust of the Qinghai-Tibet tectonic plate.

He said that no direct evidences yet that would establish any link between the Nyingchi quake to the Iran-Iraq border earthquake, and possibilities of double earthquakes are slim, he added.

Despite the recent frequent reports of different earthquakes in Asia and the Pacific region, Jiang said compared with statistics gathered in the past years, the frequency of this years' earthquakes, whether globally, or within China's mainland, is actually declining. He noted that on a global scale, on a yearly basis, there are about 18 earthquakes with a magnitude of seven or high. This year, however, there has been less than nine. On the mainland of China, there are annually more than 20 earthquakes with a magnitude of over 5; this year, however, there have been only nine so far, including Nyingchi.

But Jiang still raised concerns about relatively strong earthquakes in China.

After the earthquake shook Nyingchi, the local rescue force has been on call, ready for actions. So far, local people's life remains normal, and transportation and communication facilities have not been disrupted.
