Storyline

The Argentine Navy has dispatched three ships and two aircraft to start a search operation for a missing military submarine. The sub has not been in any contact since early Wednesday.

The missing submarine ARA San Juan, with 44 crew members on board, departed Monday from Ushuaia, near the southernmost tip of South America, and was heading back to its base in Mar del Plata, south of Buenos Aires.

"Losing communication for only one day would not be so urgent. But if it is on a second day without any communication, the submarine would in some way try to enable communication, by ways of operational, logistical, administrative, or meteorological. And in fact there is still no contact, so the search plan was launched," said Navy spokesman, Enrique Balbi.

The Argentine Navy was in the belief that the submarine might be on sea surface because it would be easier for it to seek assistance from the ships and planes joining the search operation, the spokesman added.

Balbi said that the submarine last reported its position on Wednesday and then no communication was able to establish so the search was launched by late Thursday.

The Navy spokesman indicated that the search area is in the Argentine Sea near the San Jorge Gulf, which is the sub's last known position. But the area is a large one and the three ships and two aircraft had so far "swept 15 percent of the search area."

The ARA San Juan is a German-built diesel-electric submarine. It was completed in 1985 and got its latest refit in 2014 to extend its seaworthiness by 30 years.
