Storyline

Robert Mugabe, Zimbabwe's president for nearly four decades, has stepped down.

The speaker of Zimbabwean parliament announced Mugabe's resignation on Tuesday at a session that was underway to begin impeachment proceedings against the former president.

The 93-year-old, president of Zimbabwe for 37 years, had refused to give in to demands for his resignation.

Mounting pressure, the loss of his party support and the prospect of impeachment eventually proved too much to bear.

"I, Robert Gabriel in terms of Section 96, Sub Section 1 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe, hereby formerly tender my resignation as the president of the Republic of Zimbabwe, with immediate effect," Mugabe said in his statement of resignation.

The announcement sparked wild scenes of celebration among Zimbabwean people.

"I was born in 1980. Mugabe was in power, up to today for three generations, Mugabe has been in power, everyone has been suffering because of Mugabe and nothing has been done. And today marks the new independence," said a young man.

"On behalf of Zimbabwe, I am so happy. We are liberated. I am so happy for our children, for our generation. I believe this is the new generation, this is the new beginning," said a woman.

"The joy that you are seeing is because the young are looking forward to getting jobs, the young are looking forward to a better future, the young are looking forward to a prosperous Zimbabwe," said a local resident.

Former Vice President, Emmerson Mnangagwa, has been nominated by the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union Patriotic Front (ZANU PF) party to replace Mugabe.
