More than 13,200 Chinese alligators, or Yangtze alligators, are prepared to be transferred to start their dormancy in the Yangtze Alligator Reserve in Xuancheng City of east China's Anhui Province.
With the temperature gradually dropping in the province, all the alligators have not eaten for a whole month, according to a breeder at the reserve, signaling that they are getting "sleepy".
Wild Chinese alligators often go through the hibernation in caves, but such a large number of captive amphibious animals can hardly find enough caves in the reserve and have to stay in hothouses to spend a four-month cold period.
Every alligator will first have a physical examination by being washed so as to help breeders find out if it has scars or flecks on its skin.
The breeders said they will conduct the transfer only when the temperature is lower than 10 degrees Celsius; if the sunshine is good at noon, the transfer would suspend for days.
The transfer process can be done in 10 days' time, according to the reserve.
The Anhui Yangtze Alligator Reserve is the only artificial breeding base for Chinese alligators worldwide, and to increase their number, it has released batches to their natural habitat since 2003.
Research shows those in the natural habitat have generally adapted well and begun to reproduce, with now about 130 to 150 living there.
China listed the Chinese alligator as a state first-class protected animal in 1972.
