Storyline

Right-wing candidate and former president, Sebastian Pinera, was re-elected president of Chile in the second round on Sunday.

Of the 96.31 percent of the votes counted, Pinera garnered 54.57 percent and the center-left candidate, Alejandro Guillier, 45.43 percent, according to Chile's electoral service (Servel).

The large margin victory came as a relief for Pinera as the first round on Nov. 19 the two candidates were much closer than polls had predicted.

Pinera served as the president of Chile between 2010 and 2014.

Many voters say what they are most concerned about is how the new president will lead the country in developing the economy and improving the livelihood of the people.

"The new government should attract more foreign investment to Chile and create a better investment environment to make foreign investment help boost the development of Chile. That is what the country badly needs," said a voter.

"I hope the tax rates for both the rich and us are the same. At present, the rich pay much less tax than us. I think it's unfair. We, the poor, have paid a considerable part of our income as taxes," said a voter.

As one of the countries with the highest level of development in Latin America, Chile has been facing the growing problem of social fairness, such as free education, public medical service and the effective pension system. All these will be the challenges to the new government.

"What I am most concerned about are medical service and education and whether the government will provide real high-quality and fair education to all," said a voter.

"The medical system is in crisis. The number of hospitals is limited. The education system has plunged into difficulty. The new government should provide all people with the equal opportunities for receiving education," said a voter.
