"We've not seen delays in accreditation that will pass a day. It would have been hours going into the night. 2007, a very contentious conference in Polokwane that saw president Jacob Zuma of the ANC, there were issues with credentials but they did not result in passing through a day without accepting those credentials."

"It's not unusual to delay credentials. We do it for the credibility of the process so that as you well know, this is the one point that people use to have court interdicts and court cases and injunctions, and we've been extremely careful not to open any possibility that will take us in that direction."
6. SOUNDBITE (English) Bathabile Dlamini, president of ANC Women's League:
"Always in the ANC, we ensure that credentials are accepted by everyone because they determine the status of the conference, so it's better to deal with them once and for all, attend to the nitty-gritties and move on with work."

Storyline

South Africa's ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC), announced a five-hour delay to the start of its elective conference on Saturday.

The voting of South Africa presidential election was initially scheduled to take place overnight on Saturday, but was delayed to Monday as rival factions fought over credentials of voting delegates.

Divisions emerged over who had the right to cast ballots.

The delayed adoption of credentials was caused by the court rulings that affected who would be able to vote at this conference.

The stalemate over who is eligible to vote was finally broken on Sunday afternoon. Some 4,700 delegates will now vote, instead of the original 5,200.

"We've not seen delays in accreditation that will pass a day. It would have been hours going into the night. 2007, a very contentious conference in Polokwane that saw president Jacob Zuma of the ANC, there were issues with credentials but they did not result in passing through a day without accepting those credentials," said Ralph Mathekga, political analyst.

ANC leaders however said this process might have been longer this time, but there's nothing unusual.

"It's not unusual to delay credentials. We do it for the credibility of the process so that as you well know, this is the one point that people use to have court interdicts and court cases and injunctions. And we've been extremely careful not to open any possibility that will take us in that direction," said Jessie Duarte, deputy secretary general of ANC.

"Always in the ANC, we ensure that credentials are accepted by everyone because they determine the status of the conference so it's better to deal with them once and for all, attend to the nitty-gritties and move on with work," said Bathabile Dlamini, president of ANC Women's League.
