Local residents stood hand in hand and raced against time to rescue three people out of freezing water in a park in Tangshan City of north China's Hebei Province on Sunday.

The whole rescue process was captured by the phone of one witness.

At about 16:00 on Sunday, dozens of residents stood on the thin ice, holding hands, to save the a woman and two children who had fallen into a hole of the ice water. The younger child was only three to four years old.

The incident happened on a lake in a local culture park. According to people who participated in the rescue, many residents who were playing in the park rushed to give a hand upon hearing a cry for help.

"There was a man in black who was near the site [where the incident happened]. He was the first to get there. Then we rushed to the spot after him," said Gao Xiuwei, one of the rescuers.

"My friends and I went together with other people. Some went for ropes, and others brought sticks. Then we began the rescue," said Man Xiaomeng, another rescuer.

The lake was at least two meters deep at the incident spot, and based on the memory of rescuers, people could even hear the sound of ice crashing beneath the feet.

"[Though in a hurry,] we couldn't rush up in a crowd," said Gao.

"We stood together hand in hand to save the mother and the children. Everyone made the effort," said Man.

The residents stood in line and formed a wall stretching 25 meters to the bank to avoid further ice breaking. They rescued the three people in three minutes.

"It's nothing worth mentioning. Everyone who took part in the operation had only one thought in our minds -- 'we cannot just stand aside and do nothing. We have to save them'," said Gao.
