Storyline

The closed-door Ford's Theatre in Washington D.C. has left visitors disappointed as the U.S. government on Saturday announced it entered a shutdown amid a stalemate between the Republican and Democratic parties.

Visitors said they feel the refusal of entry to the government-funded theater is "ridiculous".

"As American people, we own it. They should manage the budget a little better," said a tourist named Kimberly.

Another tourist John said that the congressmen should not get paid before the situation gets better.

"I remember the last time it happened, some national parks were closed for a time. And it's disappointing to me that the two sides can't compromise enough to keep things going, but life is life, and we have to accept something," John said.

"I feel that our legislators should not get a paycheck until they decide to move things forward. That's what I'm saying when the governments pay road staff, and other federal employees, I feel like the Senators in congressmen should be working nights, weekends, over time without pay until they resolve this," he added.

The U.S. federal government shut down at midnight Friday as the Senate failed to pass a stopgap spending bill, while negotiations continue between congressional lawmakers.

Last minute negotiations fell apart as Senate Democrats blocked a four-week short-term spending bill in a late night vote. This led to the fourth government shutdown in 25 years, with the last one occurring in 2013.

Federal agencies, such as public safety and military ones, which are considered as "essential" will remain open, while others will be closed until the Congress passes a spending bill to fund the government.
