Many Egyptians have endorsed incumbent President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi after he announced his decision to run for a second term during a televised conference in Cairo on Friday.
The announcement, stating that el-Sisi would stand again as a candidate for a four-year term in presidential elections scheduled for March, roused much favorable reaction despite the fact that it has been highly anticipated.
On Saturday, thousands rushed to notary offices to register their signatures of support for the president.
"I went to a different notary office, it was extremely crowded. I came to this one, it too was very crowded. They must create bigger spaces for people to register their signatures of support because president el Sisi's popularity is much bigger than the capacity of these offices," said Ahmed Murabet, a resident of Giza, the county's third-largest city southwest of Cairo.
The election authority says more than half a million citizens have supported 23 different candidates. The Egyptian President seems to be getting the vast majority of these signatures of support, while the leftist rights lawyer Khaled Ali may come in second place.
The Egyptian election authority is opening its doors to accept candidate applications from January 20 to 29.
