"It's winter now and there's not a lot of food in the forest areas. We often see wild elephants hunting for food in nearby villages. This time, the elephant wandered around within our exit port but could not cause any harm because of our efforts. The elephant has now returned to the forest safe and sound."

A wild Asian elephant inhabiting southwest China completed a two-hour border tour before dawn on Saturday.
Taking advantage of the dark, it moved out of Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture of Yunnan Province and went for a stroll in neighboring Luang Namtha of Laos and returned home two hours later.
Surveillance camera at Chahe border-crossing check point of Xishuangbanna public security frontier detachment captured the elephant’s movements.
According to the video footage, at 04:32 it initially puttered toward the exit of the border check point but then suddenly started trotting to it. Upon reaching the border railing, he slowed down a bit and comfortably crossed the "obstacle" to Laos.
Soldiers on duty immediately dispatched two teams respectively to look for the elephant and remind nearby residents to keep a watchful eye.

At around 06:00, the elephant was again seen finding its way back toward the border crossing, as shown in the footage. But this time he circumvented the railing and sneaked in by the side of it, like a kid who was aware of his mistake.
