"I am amazed at your achievements. Your collective economy is robust, with each villager taking part in and becoming a shareholder. All have a sense of gain. Your income also increases like sesame blossoms growing notch by notch on the stalk. Your houses are very nice that many urban people will envy you. The central government has unveiled a plan to revitalize the countryside. After realizing the goals of simply having adequate food and clothing, as well as basically being moderately well-off, we will continue to revitalize the countryside. No matter what stages of development we have reached, we still need to develop rural areas. Agriculture is our top priority that we will develop through our strategy. To accomplish these tasks, setting up rural organizations with the Party branches at the core is very important. Every train is driven by its locomotive; it is true everywhere. Here, I would like to take this occasion to extend Spring Festival greetings to the Chinese people of all ethnic groups. I wish the Chinese people of all ethnic groups and their families a happy Spring Festival."

Storyline

China would continue to revitalize the countryside, Chinese President Xi Jinping told villagers in suburban Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province, on Monday.

Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, was in the Zhanqi Village to see what the villagers have achieved in using the Internet to help sell local products.

An elderly woman wanted to give a pair of her hand-made shoes to Xi as a gift, but the president insisted on paying for them.

"I am amazed at your achievements. Your collective economy is robust, with each villager taking part in and becoming a shareholder. All have a sense of gain. Your income also increases like sesame blossoms growing notch by notch on the stalk. Your houses are very nice that many urban people will envy you," Xi told the villagers.

He said the central government has unveiled a plan to revitalize the countryside.

"After realizing the goals of simply having adequate food and clothing, as well as basically being moderately well-off, we will continue to revitalize the countryside. No matter what stages of development we have reached, we still need to develop rural areas. Agriculture is our top priority that we will develop through our strategy," said Xi.

He also stressed the importance of grassroots Party branches.

"To accomplish these tasks, setting up rural organizations with the Party branches at the core is very important. Every train is driven by its locomotive; it is true everywhere," said Xi.

Xi also extended Spring Festival greetings to the Chinese people of all ethnic groups.

Before coming to the village, Xi visited Yingxiu Town in Wenchuan County, the epicenter of the 8.0-magnitude earthquake that struck Sichuan on May 12, 2008.

Xi visited the ruins of a middle school and laid flowers in memory of more than 80,000 people killed in the quake and the heroes who died during rescue work.

Xi said the ruins must be protected to become a base for patriotism education.

He also saw the changes in Yingxiu over the past 10 years after the quake and visited a local tea making workshop and a restaurant, where he helped in making buttered tea, cooking fried crisp pork and grinding soybeans to make bean curd jelly.
