Storyline

Number of stranded vehicles increased to 13,000 at the three ports in Haikou, capital of Hainan Province, as the strait-crossing ferry services to Guangdong Province were affected by heavy fog and a ship collision in south China.

The halt of ferry services across the Qiongzhou Strait due to heavy fog and a ship collision created lengthy traffic jams, stranding more than 10,000 cars that are waiting in or outside of the three ports.

The number of stranded vehicles rose to 11,000 as of 15:00 Thursday, and the figure rose to 13,000 by 18:00.

Hainan, known for its tropical climate and clean air, is a popular destination for Chinese tourists during the Lunar New Year holiday. During the week-long Spring Festival holiday in 2017, the province received millions of tourists.

The Qiongzhou Strait links Guangdong Province with Hainan, where the ferry services is the only way for vehicles to travel to and from the island.

As a large number of travelers being stranded in the city are eager to travel back to their workplaces, flight tickets to big cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou for the next three days have been sold out.
