China's Wu Dajing overcame immense pressure as he took gold medal on Thursday in the men's 500-meter short track race at PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

The 23-year old Wu, who broke the world record twice in men's 500-meter race, spoke exclusively with China Global Television Network (CGTN) about his feelings after the competition and his expectations for the next Winter Olympic Games.

In the 4-and-a-half lap competition at the Gangneung Ice Arena, Wu claimed first place with a time of 39.584 seconds, 0.216 faster than the former record he had set earlier in the quarterfinals, which was clocked at 39.8 seconds, 0.137 off the previous record set by American John Celski in Calgary, Canada, in 2012.

Wu helped China to win the country's first gold medal at this Olympic Games, along with one silver medal in the 5,000-meter relay.

It is the first gold medal of the Chinese delegation at Pyeongchang 2018 and also the first gold medal for Chinese men's short track at the Olympics. While he was excited about the gold, he was also a bit disappointed about the outcome of the relay.

"It was a bit of a disappointment in the relay competition. In the following trainings and races, we will try to make amends. I look forward to a better result for relay at Beijing 2022," said Wu.

As China hadn't yet taken a gold medal, Wu said he had had a certain pressure over him, however, he was able to stay focused and take home the gold.

"Of course there was pressure. In the previous races, our Chinese teams have had good performances, but maybe there were some flaws. So for me, the pressure was relatively big. Today I did my best in the competition, having put aside all the pressure in preparation for the final race," said Wu.

Wu talked about his future goals and expectations for the next Winter Olympic Games which will be held in Beijing in 2022.

"I'm now looking forward to the future since our short track speed skating race has already finished at this Olympics. I have put my eyes on the next competition, the next Olympics. No matter how my career will shape up, I hope I can contribute to our country's short track development," said Wu.
