Storyline

Ferry service has resumed following days of foggy weather conditions in Haikou of south China's Hainan Province but numerous vehicles remain stranded on the island.

A prolonged period of heavy fog disrupted ferry routes on the Qiongzhou Strait, a major gateway to Hainan, affecting thousands of home returning vehicles carrying holidaymakers from across the country.

According to local meteorological department, weather conditions for ferry service across the Qiongzhou Strait are now favorable with visibility reaching more than 3,000 meters and above 1,000 meters in the coastal ports of Haikou.

Shipping service companies are working strenuously hard, but there are still some 12,000 vehicles waiting to leave near the ports. The queue of the stranded vehicles measured as long as eight kilometers at some point.

Local authorities and traffic departments are taking all the necessary efforts to ensure a smoother traffic flow while distributing food and other necessities to the people stranded.

More than 21,000 vehicles and 102,000 passengers were shipped to Guangdong across the Qiongzhou Strait between Thursday morning to Friday morning, according to local government.

The city's traffic authorities estimated that around 50,000 vehicles are expected to leave the ports, and the traffic jams will continue for another two days.

Shipping on the Qiongzhou Strait, between Hainan and Guangdong, was suspended Wednesday night due to heavy fog. Ferries resumed on Thursday morning as visibility improved.

Hainan, known for its tropical climate and clean air, is a popular destination for Chinese tourists during the Lunar New Year holiday. During the week-long Spring Festival in 2017, the province received 5.15 million tourists, according to the provincial tourism bureau.
