The annual "Man Carrying" parade was held on Friday in the Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture of southwest China's Guizhou Province.
The festival means to celebrate the village hero on the 7th or 8th day of the first month of China's lunar calendar mainly by the ethnic minority people of Dong in Guizhou Province.
In the village of Huanggang, Shuangjiang Town, Liping County, the Dong people were dressed in traditional costumes to take part in the activity, praying for blessings in the new year. Young men or children impersonated to be the "Man" (hero) were carried by villagers to parade around the village.
"The implied meaning of the Festival is that the village hero has come down with his men and horses to inspect the village to ensure security, keep law and order and secure a peaceful life of the village. The villagers pray for happiness and a bumper harvest in the new year," said Wu Xianjin, head of the village committee.
Along the route of the parade, Dong girls sang melodious folk songs, and other people played Lusheng, a musical instrument made of bamboo, and set off firecrackers to greet the village hero. The parade was followed by a flock of shutterbugs from all over the country.
"It gives us a feeling that we hope to stay on longer to know more about their customs and conventions and record them as a memory or a storage as a kind of materials," said Bai Xianyong, a tourist from northwest China's Qinghai Province.
The colorful activities of the minority people have promoted the development of local tourism. The town of Shuangjiang received over 50,000 tourists during the Spring Festival holiday, and garnered a total tourism revenue of more than three million yuan. Appropriately 20,000 tourists traveled in and around the Dong village, giving the village a tourism revenue of nearly 1 million yuan.
