Storyline

Syrian government forces on Tuesday found a tatty chemical weapons lab littered with materials in the central area of Syria's rebel enclave Eastern Ghouta.

In mid-February, Syrian government forces launched a large scale military operation to recapture areas held by rebel groups in Eastern Ghouta, a suburb of the capital Damascus.

Since then, the government forces have been continuing their offensive to take more areas back.

The situation in the central area of Eastern Ghouta still remains dangerous, with buildings visibly left in ruins after explosions and the sound of bombings and gunshots still within hearing range.

On Tuesday, government forces discovered a chemical weapons lab inside a two-story building located on a farm near the town of Douma in the central area of Eastern Ghouta.

The government forces say that they found the building when they were mine sweeping the area.

The lab on the second floor of the building is filled with bottles of liquid, and beakers, flasks which appear to have been for experimental use.

A board showing the procedures of manufacturing the chemical weapons stands amid scattered items and in the middle of the room lies a ball-shaped object - which is a finished chemical weapon, and highly dangerous.

A gas mask and rubber gloves are also among the littered around in the lab.

According to an officer from the government forces, the materials found in the lab are clearly marked and could point to part of a larger plan.

"The containers are labeled with the country of origin, and the materials in this lab come from Saudi Arabia. It looks like that Saudi Arabia, some western countries and Turkey have a long-term plan to use chemical weapons to frame the Syrian government forces," said an officer of chemical weapon special force of Syrian Arab Army who asked to remain anonymous.

Last week, Syrian deputy foreign minister Dr. Faisal Mikdad held a press conference during which he told reporters that the government had received information that rebel groups in Eastern Ghouta may be plotting a chemical weapons attack, which will be aimed at framing the government forces.

"The terrorist groups in Eastern Ghouta are plotting a chemical weapons explosion, and will use this to accuse the Syrian government forces of launching chemical weapon attacks. They have gathered the old people, women and children from outside the area to stage the show," he said.

Analysts in Syria say that chemical weapons have become a highly politicalized topic. Western countries' frequent accusations of the Syrian government of launching chemical weapon attacks have actually pointed rebel groups to form schemes to set-up the government, and has made it harder for the government to clear its name.
