Storyline

People in northeast China's Liaoning Province are looking forward to new decisions made by this year's National People's Congress(NPC) on revitalizing their hometowns, the once China's steel and iron center.

In recent years, revitalization of northeast China's old industrial base has been the buzz words for years. The region's stagnation has not gone unnoticed by the central government. T

Zhao Changwei is an engineer of high-speed railway line in Shenyang. He has been following the Two Sessions closely as the general manager of his company attended the meetings as an NPC deputy.

"I am looking forward to knowing more about the new spirit, new ideas brought back by our general manager," said Zhao Gangwei, engineer at China Railway Shenyang Group.

Policies like supply-side reform in the iron and steel sector are paving the way for the northeast to reshape its economy. Hu Mingguo, director of Foreign Trade at Benxi Steel Group Co., Ltd. thinks that iron and steel companies are at a turning point if they can find where to fit into the big picture.

"What we are interested in is the supply-side reform. I believe this is a great opportunity for steel and iron companies. Also, the Belt and Road Initiative provides us new opportunities for our steel and iron products," said Hu.

China's National People's Congress concluded on Tuesday by endorsing the broad agenda for the next five years. This year’s meetings are the longest legislative gathering in more than two decades. They passed constitutional amendments, elected a new leadership, decided on a new structure for the State Council and laid out plenty of reform plans. These decisions will influence China in its political, economic and social landscape in the years to come.

Chen Baosheng, Minister of Education, said China is investing more in developing world-class universities and disciplines, as a way to cultivate more talents. Shen Yanbai, a professor at Northeastern University, said the program opens a door for universities in Liaoning to become one of the top universities.

"To build first-class universities and disciplines in the world, we need both top universities and top disciplines. Here talents are the most critical part. We need world-class faculties. Our university is also aiming to become a first-class university," said Shen.
