4. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Hua Chunying, spokeswoman, China's Foreign Ministry:
"We're disappointed and firmly oppose the United States' unilateral investigation under Section 301 and releasing its so-called rulings. We have reiterated on several occasions that as world's largest and second largest economies, China and the United States should solve problems between them through mutual respect, reciprocity and mutual benefit, focusing on cooperation, and properly handling differences. They should work together to maintain the sound and stable development of the economic and trade relations between the two countries, which is conducive to the stability of world economy and maintenance of normal international trade order. I think it is the common aspiration of the international community."

6. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Hua Chunying, spokeswoman, China's Foreign Ministry:
"With regards to this issue, we think it's wrong and irresponsible to act in an arbitrary and reckless manner. We still hope that the relevant parties could sit down calmly and solve the related issues via constructive dialogue and negotiations, which accords with the common interest of the two countries. Of course, if the United States clings obstinately to a wrong course, as we have said, China will certainly take it on to the end. We will take all necessary measures to safeguard our legitimate interests."

Storyline

China called on the United States to solve economic and trade frictions via constructive dialogue and negotiations, a Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said on Friday.

Hua Chunying, the spokeswoman, made the statement responding to a question about communication between China and the United States after U.S. President Donald Trump signed a memorandum that could impose tariffs on up to 60 billion U.S. dollars of imports from China and restrictions on Chinese investment in the United States.

The memorandum is based on the so-called Section 301 investigation into alleged Chinese intellectual property and technology transfer practices, launched by the Trump administration in August 2017.

"The communication channel on economic and trade issues between China and United States has remained open. The two sides have also maintained communications at various levels on economic and trade issues, including the economic and trade frictions that everybody concerns," said Hua.

Hua expressed China's disappointment over and firm opposition to the decision by the United States.

"We have reiterated on several occasions that as world's largest and second largest economies, China and the United States should solve problems between them through mutual respect, reciprocity and mutual benefit, focusing on cooperation, and properly handling differences. They should work together to maintain the sound and stable development of the economic and trade relations between the two countries, which is conducive to the stability of world economy and maintenance of normal international trade order. I think it is the common aspiration of the international community," she added.

The two parties should solve the issue via dialogue and negotiation, Hua said. At the same time, China will take all necessary measures to safeguard its legitimate interests, she stressed.

We will take all necessary measures to safeguard our legitimate interests," said Hua.
