Storyline

Iraq's Joint Operations Command (JOC) denied that any foreign forces had crossed the border into Iraq during an interview with China Central Television on Monday.

Colonel Yahya Rasool, spokesman of the JOC, made the remarks in response to an announcement made by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday, which said that Turkey had begun operations in Iraq's Sinjar region to clear forces of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

"We have issued a statement denying the news. No foreign troops have crossed the Iraqi border or entered the Sinjar region. The 15th division of our army is currently guarding the areas and border region in Sinjar. And we will continue to deploy army to this region to further control Sinjar and its surrounding areas," said Rasool.

Rasool stressed during the interview that PKK, which was targeted by Turkey, has withdrawn from Sinjar. The area is now completely controlled by Iraqi forces.

The Brigadier added that Iraq did not want any escalation of the current situation, but Iraqi forces have a duty to protect the Iraqi land and its people.

"We don't want this to escalate, but we must defend Iraq's territory, all of our territory. We must defend the Iraqi people regardless of their race, religion or denomination. This is our responsibility as the army of the Iraqi federal government," said the colonel.
