Both sanctions were imposed because of North Korea's [DPRK's] violation by testing nuclear weapons six times since 2006 and numerous launches of ballistic missiles. What is important at this time, the North Korean [DPRK's] nuclear weapons and its development programs must be dismantled in a complete, verifiable and irreversible way, what we term it as CVID, complete, verifiable, irreversible dismantlement. This is very important issues, it is not only issue of North Korea [DPRK] to China or South Korea, it is a global issue for global peace and security."

Storyline

Ban Ki-moon, former United Nations Secretary-General and elected chairman of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA), said Wednesday that he hopes for an irreversible dismantling of the nuclear weapons of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

Ban made the remarks in an interview with China Global Television Network (CGTN) on the sidelines of the BFA annual conference in south China's island province of Hainan.

Ban said he hopes that the summit between the DPRK and the Republic of Korea (ROK) this month as well as the meeting between the DPRK top leader Kim Jong Un and U.S. President Donald Trump will really create a much more favorable atmosphere in Asia, particularly surrounding the Korean Peninsula.

The DPRK and the ROK have agreed to hold a summit on April 27 in the truce village of Panmunjom, the first meeting between the leaders of the two sides in 11 years.

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday that he expected to meet Kim Jong Un, the top leader of the DPRK, in May or early June, and that he hoped the two sides would be able to make a deal on the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

Ban said that the sanction itself on the DPRK was not to punish the country, and it was a strong will of the international community to show that the members of the United Nations should behave and properly conduct their way of life for international affairs. Both sanctions were imposed because of the DPRK's violation by testing nuclear weapons six times since 2006 and numerous launches of ballistic missiles, said Ban.

"What is important at this time is that the North Korean [DPRK's] nuclear weapons and its development programs must be dismantled in a complete, verifiable and irreversible way, what we termed it as CVID, complete, verifiable, irreversible dismantlement. This is a very important issue, it is not only an issue of North Korea [DPRK] to China or South Korea, it is a global issue for global peace and security," he said.
