China and Turkey should maintain high-level exchanges and deepen strategic mutual trust, Chinese President Xi Jinping told Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in a telephone conversation on Thursday.

Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), pointed out that the bilateral strategic and cooperative relations between China and Turkey have been developing steadily in recent years, and achieved positive outcomes across the board.

To deepen bilateral cooperation, Xi said that more efforts should be made to align China's Belt and Road Initiative with Turkey's Middle Corridor plan, noting that people-to-people exchanges should be facilitated and friendship between the two peoples increased.

The Chinese president stressed that China and Turkey should maintain close communications and coordination with each other within the frameworks of the United Nations, G20 and other multilateral mechanisms, so as to make positive contributions to building a new type of international relations and a community with a shared future for mankind.

For his part, Erdogan said that Turkey highly values China's role in upholding fairness and justice in international affairs, respecting the diversity of different civilizations, and maintaining that all countries, big or small, are equal.

According to the Turkish president, Turkey is willing to strengthen communication and coordination with China, take part in the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative and facilitate bilateral cooperation in areas such as economy and trade, energy, infrastructure and tourism.

Erdogan underscored that Turkey is firmly against terrorist forces including the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM), and never allows those forces to jeopardize the social stability of countries including China and Turkey.

The two presidents also exchanged views on the current situation in Syria in the conversation.

Xi stressed that all the relevant parties should act within the framework of international laws, abide by the purpose and principles of the UN Charter and respect the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of all countries.

Erdogan said that Turkey attaches great importance to China's important influence on resolving the Syrian issue through political means. Turkey is willing to strengthen communication and coordination with China in this regard, he added.
