Storyline

Chinese President Xi Jinping and British Prime Minister Theresa May agreed on Thursday to further promote the "Golden Era" of bilateral ties between the two sides.

The two leaders reached the agreement during a telephone conversation.

Xi said he and the British prime minister reached an important consensus on in-depth promotion of the "Golden Era" of bilateral relations during May's official visit to China at the beginning of this year, and agreed to further strengthen the strategic, practical, global and inclusive aspects of bilateral ties.

China is willing to work with the UK to strengthen macro policy coordination, maintain high-level and institutionalized exchanges, advance pragmatic cooperation within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative, so as to create more opportunities for improving quality and accelerating development of the "Golden Era" of bilateral ties, Xi said.

He added he hopes the UK will contribute further positive energy to the growth of the bilateral ties.

As permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, China and the UK should continue to deepen international cooperation and make larger contribution to the construction of a new type of international relations featuring mutual respect, fairness, justice, and win-win cooperation as well as construction of a community with a shared future for mankind, Xi said.

May said she was glad that the two sides reconfirmed deepening of the "Golden Era" of bilateral ties during her visit to China earlier this year. She spoke highly of the new measures to expand opening-up announced by President Xi at the opening ceremony of the Boao Forum for Asia annual conference and applauded China's efforts to launch the Shanghai-London stock connect program within this year. She said the UK is willing to work with China to implement close high-level exchanges and exchanges in various fields, expand cooperation in various fields, continue to explore constructions under the Belt and Road Initiative, and actively push forward the "Golden Era" of bilateral ties.

They also exchanged views on the situation in Syria and global trade.

Xi said China is paying high attention to the development of the situation in Syria and is consistent in opposing willful use of force in international relations. China advocates mutual respect for each other's sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity as well as actions based on rules recognized by the international community, Xi said.

Xi said relevant parties should defuse the tension as soon as possible and avoid escalation of conflicts. He called for a comprehensive, just and objective investigation into the alleged chemical attack in Syria, so as to draw firm conclusions that will stand the test of history, noting that progress should be made at an early date in the political settlement of the Syrian issue.

China is willing to continue to work with relevant parties of the international community to promote the proper solution of the Syrian issue, Xi said.

Xi said both China and the UK are beneficiaries and supporters of economic globalization, and China is willing to work with other parties including the UK to uphold the correct position of supporting free trade, actively maintain the multilateral trade system, and jointly build an open world economy.

May said the UK, like China, supports free trade and an open economy, and is willing to keep communication with the latter over relevant international and regional issues.
