Storyline

A magnificent and impressive light show lit up the night sky in Xi’an, capital of northwest China's Shaanxi Province, Tuesday night to celebrate the Labor Day.

A total of 1,347 drones equipped with colorful lights rose up to the sky above the ancient city at 20:05 Tuesday. Divided into groups and specific sequences, the drones were aligned in a way to present different images of Chinese characters to honor the holiday and the history of the city leaving the large amount of spectators overwhelmed.

"I'm greatly impressed. I can see how much the technology has advanced, and the splendid achievements brought about by the rapid development of Xi’an," said a local spectator.

Organizers say that the aim was not only entertain visitors on the 3 day holiday weekend, but also to present Xi’an to the world as something more than only a history-honored city famous for its Terracotta Warriors.

"We want the drone show held at Xi’an ancient city wall to allow our residents and audience to experience technology in a different way. We want our visitors to not only experience the historical and cultural sites, and learn more about the culture heritage of the nation, but also to be able to see the fast-developing technology and artificial intelligence. We also hope to demonstrate, be an inspiration and boost the level of confidence in Chinese culture and show that we are a powerful nation of science and technology," said Shi Zheyuan, planner of the show.

The unmanned aerial vehicles, independently developed by China, was controlled and monitored by only one operator with one computer, a first in the world. The drones navigated within centimeters, were able to communicate with each other and make way for others to avoid any collision.
