Storyline

Hundreds of economists, entrepreneurs and investors gathered at the Fourth Annual China and Globalization Forum in Beijing Sunday, discussing on the reasons and the consequences of the latest China-U.S. joint statement on trade.

China and the United States issued a joint statement Saturday on economic and trade consultations, vowing not to launch a trade war against each other. And they agreed to increase the export of U.S. agriculture and energy products.

A lot of concerns from public focused on the increases of China's imports from the U.S. Long Yongtu, chairman of the Center for China and Globalization, said that China's increase in imports is not a concession to the U.S., but is due to Chinese people's growing need for a happy life and the result of mutual benefit.

"Public opinions need to be shifted. We should not equate imports with concessions," said Long.

Wang Huiyao, Counselor of State Council, said both countries are taking what they want from each other. He agrees it a good idea for China to import agriculture products from the U.S.

"The U.S. is an agriculture abundant country, very fertile, and very productive, (there are) a lot of products China actually need. China has the biggest population in the world, we certainly need a lot of food import, and also the efficiency of China growing crops, or corn, all kinds of agricultural product, we are not as effective, efficient, and economic as the U.S.," said Wang.

Chinese entrepreneurs are confident in the future of China-US trade as well. Qian Jiannong, chairman of the Fosun Travel Culture Group, is among those with a positive attitude.

"The cooperation and opening up of the world's two major economies must be the future trend. In the long run, trade frictions will surely be resolved," said Qian.

With a normal and orderly prospect of foreign trade, Chinese entrepreneurs are also thinking about the next step of China's economy. In this regard, Wang Shi, founder of Vanke Group, summed up the development of the past as "unexpectedly good" and the future as "uncertainly charming".

"We are proud of what we achieved in the past, but we should be cautiously optimistic towards the future. Being cautious is to be careful with the probable problems and challenges ahead of us, but there's no reason not to be optimistic about the future based on the past four decades," said Wang.

In terms of China's Trade Policy adjustment after entering the new stage, experts in the forum suggest putting more strength in investing abroad, rather than focusing on attracting foreign investment.
