Heavy rain lashed southwest China's Sichuan Province on Monday and Tuesday, flooding streets, disrupting flights and leaving residents trapped in several areas.
As thunderstorm continued to batter Chengdu’s Shuangliu International Airport early Tuesday, 15 flights were forced to land at nearby airports. The airport plans to operate 982 flights on Tuesday.
On Monday, a total of 914 flights operated while 34 others were cancelled; 37 flights landed at alternate airports and four inbound flights returned due to the inclement weather.
Heavy rain accompanied by thunder and temporary gales hit southern Nanchong City between 08:00 Monday and 07:00 Tuesday. The maximum rainfall was measured at 207 mm in Dingshui Township.
Traffic police were dispatched to direct traffic in the flooded area, sanitation workers were arranged to clear the roads and rescuers were deployed to evacuate residents.
The total economic loss is currently being calculated.
The torrential rain also lashed Leshan City from Monday where the maximum rainfall was recorded over 300 mm, and even washed away part of a bridge in Shuikou Township and nearby houses.
As of 07:00 Tuesday, rescuers had evacuated about 1,000 residents to safety after a sleepless night's rescue work.
