The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) is building its east coastal city of Wonsan into a tourist attraction that can help boosting the country's economy in the coming years.
An array of hotels, villas and high-rise apartments are under construction in the Kalma coastal tourist area that covers several hundred hectares in Wonsan, known for its clean seawater and winding coastline.
According to crew members from the state-owned Air Koryo, regular flights from Pyongyang to Wonsan will open next month to attract more foreign tourists.
As a gateway to welcome international guests, the Kalma Airport was converted into a dual-use airport from a military airport.
Wonsan was under media glare again after dozens of journalists from China, Russia, the United States and Britain were invited there by the DPRK government to cover the dismantlement of the Punggye-ri nuclear test site, where Pyongyang conducted six nuclear tests. The event is scheduled for Wednesday to Friday.
