Storyline

The organs donated by a 27-year-old young man gave new life to six strangers in need of organ transplants after the man was announced brain-dead in east China's Anhui Province.

The man surnamed Chen had been critically injured in an traffic accident in the city of Anqing in April. He was diagnosed with brain death. In order to extend his life in another form, his parents decided to donate their son's organs and then contacted with the First Affiliated Hospital of the University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei City.

"The patient's parents said since there's no possibility to save their son's life, they wanted to help save other people. The more people can be saved, the better," said Yao Ziqin, director of the Organ Procurement Organization Office of the hospital.

With the parents' approval, the young man's liver, pancreas, two kidneys and a pair of corneas were donated on May 16.

The medical staff of the hospital paid silent tribute to the man before the operation.

"At last, we got his liver, pancreas, kidneys and corneas donated to six people in total. They are: two uremia patients, one with hepatic failure, a young woman diagnosed with diabetes and two patients suffering retinopathy," said Yao.

So far, the organs have all been transplanted to the people in need and are functioning well in their bodies.
