Russian President Vladimir Putin answered four questions that Chinese netizens most want to know on May 31 at the Kremelin in Moscow.

His answer came in an exclusive interview with head of the China Media Group Shen Haixiong, ahead of his attendance at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Qingdao and state visit to China.

As Putin remains one of the most popular foreign leaders in China, over 10 million Chinese netizens flocked online to raise questions with the topic as "Who is a fan of Putin" within one week.

The questions started from the upcoming 21st FIFA World Cup as Russia is the host country for the highly-anticipated football competition.

Putin frankly said that to make the World Cup a success and cater to fans around the globe are the most significant achievement for Russia.

"As you have mentioned that Russia is the host country of the World Cup, the most important and main target for us is to hold a successful World Cup and make it a grand festival for millions of fans around the world. This will be our most significant achievement," Putin said.

"As for the team, I must admit that the Russian team has not achieved outstanding results in recent years. However, we still look forward, together with all fans, including Russian fans. The Russian team can do its best to show modern, interesting and exciting football matches and fight to the end," the Russian president added.

Chinese netizens are fond of asking questions about football, with "who is Putin's favorite football player" winning a huge number of "likes" on the question list.

"Among Russian and former Soviet Union football players, I like Lev Yashin the most. Pele from Brazil is my favorite one among foreign players. I also appreciate [Diego] Maradona from Argentina," Putin said.

Chinese also cares about how the Russian president keeps fit, as his pictures of being strong go viral online in China.

"I will stay in the gym for two to two and a half hours. I also swim. If I have a partner, I also practice judo on tatami. Not as often as I want but I also play ice hockey. It's a bit of exaggeration but I really play ice hockey. I rather try to play it," he said.

Putin is a huge online celebrity, especially among Chinese young ladies, due to his masculine images of flying a fighter jet or driving a submarine. So Chinese netizens asked Putin: "what would you do if you never entered politics?"

Putin said serving as a lawyer might be a reliable choice.

"I used to work in the intelligence department of the former Soviet Union. But now I have my own career. As I graduated from the department of law at Saint Petersburg State University, in principle, I can be a legal adviser or a lawyer. However, at first I worked in the security agency, the intelligence department of the former Soviet Union, and then I worked in the St. Petersburg municipal government, a local one. I loved all these work experiences. I think I could also be qualified for the lawyer position," Putin said.

Putin in 2016 attended the G20 Summit in Hangzhou City and wowed the Chinese by bringing a box of Russian ice cream that began to be popular in China. Shen asked what gift he will take to China this time in the Qingdao SCO summit.

"Yes, I will [take some gifts]. Because General Secretary Xi Jinping once mentioned that he liked Russian ice cream, I brought some for him as a gift. We exchanged some small things between us. But if I publicly disclose in advance what gift I will give to President Xi, how can we call it a surprise? Just let it be a secret between us for the moment. Later I will tell you privately," he said.

The Chinese media official wrapped up the exclusive interview by wishing the World Cup in Russia a great success.

This was the first exclusive interview by Putin with the foreign press since starting his new presidential term and the first with the Chinese media at the Kremlin.

The SCO summit will be held on Saturday and Sunday in east Chinese coastal city of Qingdao.
