Storyline

Walking into the Kabuqi Desert, one of seven largest deserts in China, one will be impressed by the vast expansion of greenness.

But years before Chinese people started to combat desertification in the Kabuqi Desert, it had a different look.

"Before we started to tackle desertification, it was nicknamed 'Sea of Death', where sands were all over the sky, vegetation coverage was small, less than five percent, and animals were almost extinct," said Zhang Lixin, deputy director of Kubuqi Desert Research Institute.

Desert control is a worldwide problem and the Kubuqi Desert is the first desert in the world to achieve large-scale successful control.

To tame the wild Kabuqi Desert in Ordos, north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, the Chinese government gathered three parties' efforts to combat desertification.

With government policy support, industrial investment from enterprises, and market-oriented participation of farmers and herdsmen, the local government encouraged all sides to participant into the desert control.

After over 30 years efforts, China has greened more than 600,000 hectares of its total land, which covers about 1.86 million hectares.

The way Chinese government used to tame the desert has been recognized by the international community as the Kabuqi Model. It has been widely applauded.

"I want to give you a figure to show changes on the ecologic environment of the Kabuqi Desert. Statistics from the local meteorological department showed that there was only one sandstorm in the Kabuqi Desert in 2017, but in 1988 before we started to combat desertification, how many sandstorms happened here? 50 times," said Zhang.

Science and technology have been used in desert control.

Trigs on the lower part of newly-planted trees have to be removed to ensure the growth of the crown.

"We trim off the trigs on the lower part to enable the crown to have enough water, so that trigs on the top can grow. If the trigs are not removed, it is not good for the growth of the top, as well as for the entire tree," said Chang Zhaohui, an agricultural technician from the Department of the Kabuqi Desert Ecology under Elion Resources Group Limited.

The Chinese government created more than 100 methods to control desert such as planting trees in containers.

Currently, the survival rate of vegetation in the Kabuqi Desert has been increased to over 85 percent.

In 2017, the United Nations (UN) Environment Program released an ecological wealth report on the Kabuqi Desert, saying tackling desertification in the region created more than 500 billion yuan.

The report is UN’s first ecological wealth report.
