The average concentration of PM2.5 in Beijing from January to May was 58 micrograms per cubic meter, down 18.3 percent year on year, according to the Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau.
However, the concentration in April and May picked up year on year.
In April, the average reading of PM2.5, airborne particles measuring less than 2.5 microns, stood at 64 micrograms per cubic meter, up 20.8 percent from a year ago. In May, the average concentration of PM2.5 measured 54 microns, up 8 percent year on year.
In the first five months, the authorities fined the owners of more than 117,700 heavy-duty diesel vehicles for excessive emissions, twice the total number fined throughout 2017.
To control the emission problem in catering business, the environmental protection agencies worked with urban management departments to jointly inspect 11518 catering enterprises and spotted 532 problems.
