Storyline

After Turkey's incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdogan won the presidential election on Sunday, his supporters gathered on streets to celebrate his victory.

Preliminary results showed Erdogan won 52.6 percent of votes in the presidential race, with 97.2 percent of votes counted.

By 23:00 local time on Sunday, in the parliamentary election, the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) had garnered 42.4 percent, after 98 percent of votes were counted.

Although having the highest number of lawmakers at the parliament, the AKP may lose the majority at the 600-seat parliament since the party has received only 293 seats, according to initial results.

Only alliance with the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), which had more than 11 percent of votes, will enable the AKP to keep the majority of the parliament and win around 340 seats.

The AKP has already made an election alliance with the MHP under the People's Alliance.

In the opposition camp, the Republican People's Party (CHP) is projected to win 193 seats.

The pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) garnered 11.2 percent of votes and is projected to win 67 seats.

President Erdogan on Sunday night declared his victory in a live broadcast on TV, citing unofficial preliminary results of the elections.

Tens of thousands of Erdogan's supporters gathered on the streets, waiting in front of the AKP headquarters in Ankara for the president's speech.

Some supporters even drove hundreds of kilometers to Ankara to celebrate Erdogan's victory. They expected new changes to be brought by the re-elected president.

"The new system will bring about stability and end the political unrest. A powerful government will emerge. It will pave a new path for Turkey," said a supporter of Erdogan.

Nihat, another supporter said he believed the capability of Erdogan.

"I believe our leader can lead us forward. We're lucky to have such a leader," said Nihat.

The presidential and parliamentary elections will complete Turkey's transition from a parliamentary system to a new executive presidential one, a move approved in a referendum last year.
