Senior officials from China and the ASEAN countries met on the implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC) in the central Chinese city of Changsha on Wednesday.
ASEAN stands for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations that groups ten countries in the region.
The diplomats discussed issues including the implementation of the DOC, maritime pragmatic cooperation, and the negotiation of the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea (COC).
Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Kong Xuanyou, who is leading the Chinese delegation, said China expects relevant parties to continue with their efforts in pushing forward dialogue and cooperation, and strive for more outcomes and progress.
"I expect my colleagues, on the basis of practical cooperation and constructive attitude, can have sincere and in-depth exchange of views on comprehensively and effectively implementing the DOC, push forward the COC, and strive for new consensus and achievements, so as to send a positive signal to the outside, and create better condition and atmosphere for the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting this August," he said.
Thanks to the joint efforts of China and other countries in the region, the current situation in the South China Sea has been stabilized and maintains positive momentum. Thus how to further advance the COC framework China and ASEAN adopted last August has become a hot topic for discussion.

And since the first round of negotiation in March, we hope that the spirit of cooperation and flexibility shown by every delegation thus far will continue to help us to make great progress. We look forward to a fruitful discussion and a productive meeting this morning," said Chee Wee Kiong, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Singapore.
The DOC, signed in 2002 by China and ASEAN, outlines the most important principles for managing disputes on the South China Sea. And the consultations for the COC were launched by the two sides in 2013. Both are aimed at safeguarding peace and stability in the region.
The year 2018 marks the 15th anniversary of the China-ASEAN strategic partnership. On this occasion, the two sides are expected to foster stronger ties and cooperation.
