Chinese Minister of National Defense Wei Fenghe held a welcome ceremony for visiting U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis in Beijing on Wednesday.
At the welcome ceremony, the two officials shook hands and reviewed the honor guard of the People's Liberation Army.
During the meeting after the welcome ceremony, Wei said Mattis' visit will help ease tension, promote mutual trust and facilitate a more healthy relationship between the two countries' militaries.
Mattis also invited Minister Wei to visit the United States at his earliest convenience.
Mattis is the first Pentagon chief to visit China since 2014. He began his three-day visit to China on Tuesday.
