Storyline

China’s great contribution to the world economy is widely recognized over the past 17 years since its accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2001, said a spokeswoman of the Chinese Foreign Ministry in Beijing on Tuesday.

Hua Chunying, the spokeswoman, made the remarks at a press briefing following the U.S. repeatedly slammed China for failing to live up to WTO commitments in its reports and used it as an excuse to take unilateral actions against China.

Over the past 17 years, China has made great efforts and paid heavy price to contribute to the world economy. Since 2002, China has contributed around 30 percent of global economic growth annually, said Hua.

"If China does not comply with WTO rules, why did China choose to join the WTO? Its conviction of integrating into economic globalization is in line with the historical trend, and promoting free and open trade would achieve mutual benefits and win-win results are the reasons behind China's decision to enter the WTO. Over 17 years since its accession to the WTO, China has kept its original aspirations unchanged and matched word to deed," she said.

China recently issued a white paper titled "China and the World Trade Organization," which presents facts and figures to show that China has fully fulfilled its WTO commitments such as tariffs cut on goods and opening up service trade, according to Hua.

"If China does not comply with WTO rules, why has China always firmly upheld core values and basic principles of the WTO ? China firmly believes that only adhering to the international rules under the spirit of contract, can the authority and effectiveness of the multilateral trading system be upheld," she said.

China didn't, does not, and will not take unilateral measures, or violate basic WTO principles of free and open, non-discrimination, tariff binding, and "special and differential treatment", according to Hua.

"China's efforts to comply with WTO rules and fulfill WTO commitments have been widely recognized by the international community. During WTO's seventh trade policy review of China several days ago, all parties lauded China’s move to open-up and advance comprehensive deepening of reform, as well as China’s support and contribution to the multilateral trading system," she said.

While vowing to continue to be a model in complying with WTO rules, China also urged the U.S. to respect and abide by WTO rules with practical actions and maintain a multilateral trading system, which is now centered on the WTO, Hua said.
