"Globalization was proposed by the countries of the West because they saw in globalization they would have access to the other countries in the world. Their market enlarged from domestic to the international, to the world. So they want globalization, but now globalization has also meant opening up their market to goods from these other countries, which they expect just to be a market. This market is now the center of production, the factory of the world. And they are producing things for the American market, the European market. So when they proposed the idea of globalization it was to benefit them. But now they find that globalization is benefiting other countries, especially countries in the east. So they now do not like the idea, it was their idea is in their first place, but now they do not like the idea. They resort to protectionism, that is what America is doing, simply because America just cannot compete with China and other countries in the East."

Storyline

Western countries such as the United States won't uphold the concept of globalization and is tending towards protectionism because they fear eastern countries are enjoying greater benefits, according to Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad.

Mahathir made the remarks during an interview with China Central Television (CCTV) in Beijing on Sunday as he continues his five-day visit to China.

And they are producing things for the American market, the European market," said Mahathir.

The prime minister pointed out that the U.S. is implementing a protectionist approach because it has run short of strength to compete with China and other east countries in the wave of globalization.

"When they proposed the idea of globalization it was to benefit them. But now they find that globalization is benefiting other countries, especially countries in the east. So they now do not like the idea, it was their idea is in their first place, but now they do not like the idea. They resort to protectionism, that is what America is doing, simply because America just cannot compete with China and other countries in the East," said Mahathir.

Since the beginning of this year, the United States has ignited trade frictions with China by imposing additional tariffs on Chinese goods, while China has taken similar countermeasures, which has brought much uncertainty and anxiety for the global market.

China has been generally devoted to playing a positive role in global economic development, through proposals such as its Belt and Road Initiative, which was first outlined by Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2013, aiming to drive global growth by promoting the infrastructure, connectivity, financial mechanisms and public policies needed to spur trade, especially between the world's emerging and developing regions.

Mahathir said that he believes the Belt and Road Initiative has potential to benefit people all across Asia.

"I think it is going to improve and increase trade between the East and West with southeast Asia and China. And generally, it will benefit the whole region -- southeast Asia and east Asia," he said.

Mahathir started his five-day visit in China Friday and met with President Xi on Monday, vowing to deepen cooperation between the two countries.

China-Malaysia bilateral cooperation has seen a rapid development in recent years. In 2017, the trade volume exceeded 96 billion U.S. dollars, with an increase of 10.5 percent year on year. China has been Malaysia's largest trade partner for nine years in a row and the trade volume is expected to surpass 100 billion U.S. dollars this year.
