"El Salvador has made a political decision to recognize and commit to abiding by the One-China principle and established diplomatic ties with China without any preconditions. El Salvador is standing together with most countries in the world. Now there are 178 countries that have diplomatic ties with China. This has fully proved once again that sticking to the One-China principle is the right choice that conforms to international norms and the trend of the times, meets the expectation of the people and represents a general trend. China and El Salvador will deepen political mutual trust, tap their complementary advantages, and carry out mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields on the basis of the One-China principle."

Storyline

Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Salvadorian Foreign Minister Carlos Castaneda signed a joint communique in Beijing Tuesday on the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

According to the communique, the People's Republic of China and the Republic of El Salvador, in accordance with the interests and wishes of the two peoples, decided to recognize each other and establish diplomatic relations at ambassadorial level from the date of signing of the communique.

The two governments agreed to develop friendly relations on the basis of the principles of mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, non-aggression, non-interference in each other's internal affairs, equality and mutual benefit and peaceful coexistence.

The Salvadorian government recognizes that there is only one China in the world, that is the People's Republic of China whose government is the sole legal government representing the whole of China, and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of the Chinese territory.

The Salvadorian government has today severed its so-called "diplomatic relations" with Taiwan and has promised to refrain from any official relations or exchanges with Taiwan. The government of the People's Republic of China appreciates the above position of the Salvadorian government.

Wang said the decision by El Salvador to cut ties with Taiwan is a right choice that's in line with the international trend.

China and El Salvador will deepen political mutual trust, tap their complementary advantages, and carry out mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields on the basis of the One-China principle," said Wang.
