Storyline

The United States' decision to impose additional tariffs on 200 billion U.S. dollars worth of Chinese products will cause negative consequences, said a Chinese expert on Tuesday.

Li Wei, head of the Institute of American and Oceania Studies of the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, made the remarks in an interview with China Central Television.

The U.S., disregarding international and domestic trending opposition, made an announcement to impose 10 percent additional tariffs on 200 billion U.S. dollars worth of Chinese products from Sept. 24, and take other escalating tariff measures.

Li said this is an unilateral trade blackmail.

"We can say it has seriously trampled on international trade rules. It is a naked trade bully," said Li.

"The move of the U.S. tariffs has seriously disturbed the global value chains and industrial trains and brought a huge negative impact on the companies and consumers in China and the U.S. as well as on the global economy," he said.

Li added that the U.S. had said it would start negotiations with China and would have high-level talks with China at the end of this month. But before the negotiations start, the U.S. announced to impose tariffs and would put more tariffs on Chinese products if China implements countermeasures.

"This brings a big uncertainty to the negotiations between China and the U.S," said Li.

Li also said China has always said it wouldn't be the first one to escalate the China-U.S. trade frictions.

"All the countermeasures we have taken are mainly designed to safeguard our interests and the multilateral trade system," said Li.
