Storyline

Afghanistan’s Charlie Chaplin is making efforts to make people laugh and help them get more knowledge about his motherland in a brand new way.

Karim Asir, the 25-year-old comedian, performs across the capital Kabul in Chaplin’s trademark black suit, baggy pants, cane and bowler hat.

He also organized his own performance team to present comedic shows on streets in Kabul, the capital city of Afghanistan.

Though only with some tables and simple stage properties, his performance is so well received by the local audience that many of them tend to take photos with him after shows. The media reports made him even more famous and more show invitations keep coming to him.

However, it isn't easy to perform in a city that suffers repeated attacks. Sometimes Asir is also questioned and even threatened by others, but he has never planned to quit. What made him resolved to keep his career firmly is an experience of performance abroad.

"When the announcer announced Afghanistan is tomorrow night, [there was a] discussion between ... [One] said, 'Do you want to come for an Afghan's show?' Another one said, 'No, the Afghan's performance will be only bomb and explosion, not other.' I really became unhappy, and it was really a very bad moment for me," he said.

The long-term turbulent situation in Afghanistan impresses common people deeply with terrorism and attacks. However, music and artistic performances have always been a part of the traditional Afghan culture.

After staging performance abroad, Asir started to present more and more stories about nobodies, and has hence taken the image of "Afghan Charlie Chaplin".

With the reports of the image, more and more people started to notice Asir, his country, and the comedic performance art of the country.

"Day by day it's becoming more and more, more and more. We received a lot of e-mails, we received a lot of comments on social media. And I always follow the comments and messages. These comments also will help us to bring changes," he said.

Now Asir is planning to produce a movie in order to arouse increasing numbers of people’s interests to know more about Afghanistan.
