"When the high-level economic and trade consultations between China and the United States will be resumed depends purely on the attitude of the United States. China's door is open to the resumption of economic and trade consultations and negotiations. If the consultations and negotiations are to be fruitful, the first thing to do is for the two sides to treat each other equally and respect each other."

"Secondly, for the consultations and negotiations to happen, there must be sincerity and credibility. We have already conducted four rounds of high-level consultations, which have led to a lot of common understandings, and we have even published a joint statement. However, the U.S. has repeatedly gone back on its own words, cast away these common understandings and taken trade restrictive measures, which have made it impossible for negotiations to continue. Therefore, I want to emphasize that as long as there is sincerity and as long as the two sides treat each other equally and abide by their promises, a way out can be found through negotiations."

"The trade war initiated by the United States has failed to bring any gains to itself. The United States is an important source of agricultural imports for China. However, in the first seven months of this year, China's agricultural imports from other countries, including Brazil and Australia, grew substantially, while the imports from the United States registered only a modest growth. In the automobile sector, the United States used to be the biggest supplier to the Chinese market, but now it has been taken over by Germany."

Storyline

China is open to consultations and negotiations on trade frictions, but when such consultations and negotiations will re-start depends entirely on the attitude of the United States, said Wang Shouwen, China's Vice Minister of Commerce.

Wang, also the Deputy China International Trade Representative, made the statement on Tuesday when briefing the media on a white paper China released on Monday to clarify the facts about China-U.S. economic and trade relations.

"When the high-level economic and trade consultations between China and the United States will be resumed depends purely on the attitude of the United States. China's door is open to the resumption of economic and trade consultations and negotiations. If the consultations and negotiations are to be fruitful, the first thing to do is for the two sides to treat each other equally and respect each other," said Wang.

He added that the U.S. has taken major trade restrictive measures, which have made the consultations and negotiations unequal.

In addition, he emphasized that the two sides have to be sincere and trust each other in negotiations.

"We have already conducted four rounds of high-level consultations, which have led to a lot of common understandings, and we have even published a joint statement. However, the U.S. has repeatedly gone back on its own words, cast away these common understandings and taken trade restrictive measures, which have made it impossible for negotiations to continue. Therefore, I want to emphasize that as long as there is sincerity and as long as the two sides treat each other equally and abide by their promises, a way out can be found through negotiations," he said.

Wang further noted that the trade war initiated by the United States has failed to bring any gains to itself.
