"The Chinese economy has generally been operating steadily this year, trending for the better. Despite the significant changes in the external environment, China boasts a strong endogenic driving force in its foreign trade development. Its ‘friends circle’ in foreign trade has been further expanded. The effect of all kinds of foreign trade policies and measures have gradually been revealed. All these have provided a solid backing to foreign trade in its steady growth in the first three quarters."

Storyline

China's merchandise import and export rose 9.9 percent year on year to 22.28 trillion yuan in the first nine months of this year, according to customs data released on Friday.

This included 11.86 trillion yuan in export, growing 6.5 percent, and 10.42 trillion yuan in import, growing 14.1 percent, leaving a surplus of 1.44 trillion yuan, shrinking by 28.3 percent, according to the statistical data from the General Administration of Customs.

The European Union, the United States and ASEAN countries remained China's biggest trading partners, with import and export growing 7.3 percent, 6.5 percent and 12.6 percent, respectively, accounting for 41.2 percent of China's total import and export volume.

The steady growth amid rising external uncertainties is largely attributable to China's domestic driving force, said Li Kuiwen, head of the administration’s statistics and analysis department.

All these have provided a solid backing to foreign trade in its steady growth in the first three quarters," said Li.

In the meanwhile, China's import and export with Russia, Poland, and Kazakhstan along the Belt and Road grew 19.4 percent, 11.9 percent and 11.8 percent, respectively, all higher than the growth of the entire national foreign trade.

"China's trade with countries along the Belt and Road increased by 13.2 percent in the first three quarters, 3.3 percentage points higher than the average growth of foreign trade in the same period, becoming a bright spot in China's foreign trade development," he said.
