Storyline

China's foreign trade maintained a good momentum of growth in the first three quarters of 2018, said an official from the Ministry of Commerce on Wednesday.

The foreign trade volume reached 22.28 trillion yuan (about 3.2 trillion U.S. dollars) in the period, up 9.9 percent year on year. Export increased by 6.5 percent to 11.86 trillion yuan (about 1.71 trillion U.S. dollars), and import was up 14.1 percent to 10.42 trillion yuan (about 1.51 trillion U.S. dollars), resulting in a trade surplus of 1.44 trillion yuan (about 208.6 billion U.S. dollars), down by 28.3 percent year on year, according to the official.

"The first three quarters in 2018 have seen a gradual growth of foreign trade. The trade volumes stood at 6.76 trillion yuan (about 970 billion U.S. dollars), 7.35 trillion yuan (about 1.1 trillion U.S. dollars) and 8.17 trillion yuan (about 1.2 trillion U.S. dollars) in the past three quarters respectively, among which the volume in the third quarter reached a historical high," said Song Xianmao, deputy director of the department of foreign trade of the ministry.

Song said in terms of commodity structure, the export of mechanical and electrical products rose 7.8 percent to reach 6.91 trillion yuan (about 996 billion U.S. dollars), taking up 58.3 percent of the total export after gaining 0.7 percentage points. Among them, the export of integrated circuits, automobiles, automotive chassis, mobile phones and components grew rapidly.

Driven by favorable factors such as continuous efforts in opening-up, import expansion policies and import tariffs cut, import increased 14.1 percent and contributed 64.2 percent to foreign trade growth. Import has become a driving force of the sector this year.

The import of mechanical and electrical products was 4.72 trillion yuan, up 13.0 percent year on year, and boosted the import growth by 6.0 percentage points. Import of items closely related to people's daily life such as cosmetics, fruits and dried fruits increased by 75.1 percent and 30.2 percent respectively, the official added.
