The China-ASEAN "Joint Naval Drill-2018" began Monday morning with a ceremony at a military harbor in the city of Zhanjiang, south China's Guangdong Province.
Present at the opening ceremony were observers, naval officers and men of participating countries.
The joint drill serves as an important platform for exchanges and learning between China and ASEAN countries and enhancing mutual understanding. It will become an important brand for China and ASEAN countries to deepen defense cooperation and exchanges and serve as a new starting point for creating a China-ASEAN community of shared destiny and for coordinating efforts to safeguard regional peace and security.
Zhu Jianda, Chinese commander of the shore-base headquarters, said: "It is of a milestone significance to hold for the first time the joint drill with ASEAN countries in China. The chief purpose is to strengthen exchanges and cooperation and see to it that we can reach a consensus with the ASEAN countries before we will make the drill regular and extend and deepen subjects of the drills and strengthen cooperation in maritime security and defense cooperation."
After the ceremony, a meeting was held to discuss drill plans. Observers from various countries, operations officers, navigation officers and pilots discussed the plan together.
The drill will be conducted in three stages: port activities, drill on the sea and drill assessment.
