"Like it's not real. It's when you see their fear on their faces, you're like 'snap out of it, this isn't television, this is real'. Who do you help first? Really, I mean, the officers that showed up I don't know how they got there so fast, but they were ready and they jumped into action and they went to go get that guy. And those kids just ran. There wasn't as many cars in that parking lot, but they just flooded across the street. The only lights that they probably could see on was this gas station."
(Reporter: Can you tell me one last story about the two college students you saw come out and they saw each other?)
"Oh my gosh. You know you're surrounded by these kids crying and shaking, crying for their mothers. And these two young men see each other and they both thought that they had died, that the other had died. And when they see them, they ran towards each other right in front of me, wrapped their arms around each other. 'You're alive ! 'No, you're alive !' And it was just like a moment of hope and joy. Right, it's humanity that was [lost], that is what is so hard."

Storyline

As concerned parents of victims of the mass shooting at a bar in the U.S. state of California come to terms with the loss of their loved ones, a mother recalled on Thursday how she feared for the safety of her two daughters during the tragic incident.

The mass shooting that took place at the Borderline Bar and Grill in the city of Thousand Oaks late Wednesday night left 13 people dead, including a police officer and the gunman, with more than 20 others injured, local authorities confirmed.

The gunman has been identified as 28-year-old former U.S. Marine Ian David Long. Authorities believe the gunman shot himself after carrying out the killing spree.

Sarah Silikula, a mother of two daughters who are regular patrons of the bar, was quite concerned when she realized what was going on. She frantically called her daughter to learn of her whereabouts.

"One of my daughters who I thought was here at Borderline, and she said 'Lock up. Don't go outside. There's a mass shooter at Borderline.' And I said 'How do you know this? Are you there? Are you safe? ' She said 'Mom, I didn't go. But my friends are there and I just talked to one of them. She is hiding in the bathroom. She's the one that told me,'" said Silikula.

Silikula added that her daughter has not yet heard back from her friend.

The Borderline is a popular site for local college students. According to Silikula, it is usually noisy, but that night the atmosphere was "creepy and everything too still."

The only lights that they probably could see on was this gas station," she said.

Choking back tears, Silikula described the scene when she saw two survivors hugging each other after the shooting.

"You're surrounded by these kids crying and shaking, crying for their mothers. And these two young men see each other and they both thought that they had died, that the other had died. And when they see them, they ran towards each other right in front of me, wrapped their arms around each other. 'You're alive ! 'No, you're alive !' And it was just like a moment of hope and joy. Right, it's humanity that was [lost], that is what is so hard," said Silikula.
