"You also see that the nails are already turning to the side. The nails are very very bad. And also she can punch here, herself, because the nails are too long and too sharp. This can give a hole. And then some infection can go inside, and this gives a big swelling. It's very painful for the falcon. So for this reason, we have to trim the nails, to cut the nails once or twice per year."

Storyline

As a national symbol of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), falcons have played a crucial part in the traditional culture of the Middle East country. So it is fitting that Abu Dhabi, capital of the UAE, is home to the world's largest hospital for falcons where falcons can receive physical examination and have surgeries.

Margit Gabriele Muller, executive director of the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital, and a beautician were offering grooming services to a falcon under anesthetic.

"You also see that the nails are already turning to the side. The nails are very very bad. And also she can punch here, herself, because the nails are too long and too sharp. This can give a hole. And then some infection can go inside, and this gives a big swelling. It's very painful for the falcon. So for this reason, we have to trim the nails, to cut the nails once or twice a year," said Muller.

Muller said that the work seems simple but requires skill and experience.

"All the nails are black. There is a bone underneath, and there are also blood vessels and nerves. If you cut too much, you end up in the blood vessels and nerves. And it's very painful. If you cut too little, it will grow too fast. So it really goes by experience how you have to do," said Muller.

After cutting, trimming and smoothening the nails, they need to massage the claws, according to Muller.

"Now we are massaging the feet. Massage is not only good for people, also for falcons. It's very good. It's increasing the blood circulation," said Muller.

In addition to providing basic care for falcons, the hospital can do endoscopic and X-rays examinations for the national bird. There is even a large intensive-care unit for the sickest birds.

"But we even have an intensive care station. We have wards so that we can hospitalize falcons that require treatment and we are having huge cages which are climatizer for falcons to change the feathers in the summer time. So that for this reason, falcons are coming from all different countries to ask for treatment," said Muller.

The hospital, opened in 1999, has treated more than 110,000 birds for owners who cherish them like family members.
