Storyline


French police have shot dead the gunman who attacked the Strasbourg Christmas market on Tuesday, said officials with the French Ministry of Interior on Thursday.

More than 700 police officers and 1,200 military soldiers were involved in hunting down the gunman since the attack, which left three dead and 13 injured. According to the French press, no police was injured in this action.

Local residents say the death of the shooter has eased their on-edge nerves over two days, allowing them to return to normal life.

"We heard choppers nearby and then the police locked down the place. We could not get out. We were at the Christmas market on [Dec.] 11. Knowing that he (the attacker) is shot dead has put us at ease. This incident will sure affect us for a while, but now we need to move on instead of being trapped," said Laurent, a local resident.

The Strasbourg market will resume operation on Friday with shortened opening hours, fewer entrances and exits. Police will also be deployed to the market to ensure safety.
