Storyline


China honored people who have made outstanding contributions to its reform and opening-up in the past 40 years.

At a grand gathering Tuesday in Beijing to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the country's reform and opening-up, leaders of the country presented Medals of Reform Pioneers to 100 Chinese people coming from a wide range of walks, including scientists, economists, grass-roots CPC cadres, model workers, state firm managers, and private entrepreneurs.

Among them are eighteen farmers who piloted the household contract responsibility system in Xiaogang Village, Ma Yun, innovator of digital economy, Li Yining, champion of economic reforms, Sun Jiadong, instrumental contributor to innovation in China's aerospace program and Tu Youyou, leading scientist in innovations in traditional Chinese medicine.

The leaders also presented China Reform Friendship Medals to 10 foreigners(or their representatives) who have also made great contributions to China's development in the past four decades.

They are:

Alain Mrieux, pathfinder who contributed to development and international cooperation of China's health care sector;

Werner Gerich, China's first foreign factory manager since reform and opening up;

Klaus Schwab, global advocate who facilitated China's dialogue and cooperation with the international community in economic field;

Konosuke Matsushita, pioneer who led his world renowned enterprise in participating in China's reform and opening up;

Masayoshi Ohira, statesman who promoted the normalization of China-Japan relations and supported China's reform and opening up;

Lee Kuan Yew, statesman who led Singapore's deep engagement in China's reform and opening up;

Juan Antonio Samaranch, promoter of China's participation in global Olympic movement;

Stephen Perry, promoter of China-UK friendship and trade and people-to-people exchanges;

Maurice Greenberg, entrepreneur who advocated and promoted economic and trade cooperation between China and other countries and China-U.S. friendship;

Robert Kuhn, a friend of China who told the stories of contemporary China to the world.
