Storyline

China's BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) has been widely used and benefited the world, said an official on Thursday.

Ran Chengqi, spokesman for the BDS, made the statement while briefing the development of BeiDou-3 navigation satellite system and its service at a press briefing in Beijing.

"BeiDou has been widely used and is going abroad to benefit the world. First of all, its industrial scale is expanding," said Ran.

Ran noted that the number of enterprises and institutions involved has reached 14,000 with more than 500,000 employees. A large number of competitive satellite companies have been emerging in five industrial areas including the Pearl River Delta, Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, Yangtze River Delta, Hubei-Henan-Hunan and Sichuan-Shaanxi-Chongqing regions.

"Independently-developed BeiDou chips have used the 28-nanometer technology. China's patent applications on satellite navigation added up to 54,000, ranking the first globally," said Ran, who is also the director of China Satellite Navigation Office.

The BDS has been applied to wider areas, said Ran.

"A total of 6.17 million vehicles for road transport services, 35,600 postal and express delivery vehicles, 80,000 buses in 36 key cities, 3,230 pieces of waterway navigation equipment and 2,960 pieces of maritime navigation equipment are now using BeiDou. The intelligent vehicles with BeiDou high precision technology is expected to come into the market in 2019," said Ran.

Ran said BeiDou has made new breakthroughs in internationalization.

"BeiDou has been serving Russia, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, Pakistan, Kuwait, Algeria, Uganda and other countries, winning widespread acclaim," said Ran.

Ran said providing global services is both a major step and a new starting point for the development of the system.

"By 2020, we will continue to launch 11 BeiDou-3 satellites and one BeiDou-2 satellite to complete the network in all respects as well as improve its performance. We will build a ubiquitous, more integrated and intelligent positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) system with the BeiDou system as its core by 2035," said Ran.
